A variety of activities are planned for Conway bicycling enthusiasts during the month of May, which is National Bicycle Month as sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists.
Bike to Toad Suck Daze
Activities in Conway begin this weekend at Toad Suck Daze as MEMS, Conway Advocates for Bicycling and the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Board will host bicycle parking at a booth near the courthouse at the corner of Locust and Main. Parking will be available from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Children’s Bicycle Rodeo at TSD
A bicycle safety mini-rodeo will be hosted from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the MEMS booth on the corner of Locust and Main on Saturday, May 5. Children ages 5 to 12 may participate with parent or guardian permission. Bicycles and helmets will be available during the rodeo.
Tour de Toad
The Literacy Action of Central Arkansas will host the Tour de Toad on the morning of Sunday, May 6. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at Conway High School’s west campus and the ride begins at 8 a.m. The distances are 33 and 46 miles.
Bike to School Day – May 9
Bike to School Day is Wednesday, May 9. Children are encouraged to ride their bicycles to school that day. Activities are planned at Marguerite Vann Elementary School where students who ride a bicycle to school that day will receive special recognition and all students will participate in a bike rodeo safety clinic in Sherri Pillow’s PE classes. Students who do not own a bike helmet can receive one free through a “Growing Healthy Communities” grant from the Arkansas Coalition for Obesity Prevention. League Cycling Instructor Jim Bruce will direct the clinic with volunteers from the local support groups.
Bike to Work Week – May 14-18
Bike to Work Week is May 14-18. Local bike shop, The Ride, is hosting the Conway Commuter Cup Challenge which will track individual and business groups who commute to work by bicycle during that week. Individuals and groups who wish to compete may sign up at www.greenlightride.com and select “Conway Commuter Cup Challenge.” Individual and business winners will be announced during the Bike From Work Social at ZAZA’s on Friday, May 18.
Bike to Lunch at Green Cart Deli
On Monday, May 14, bicycle commuters are invited to Bike to Lunch at the Green Cart Deli at Simon Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bicyclists will receive $1 off lunch.
Bike to Work Day Breakfast
Breakfast will be provided for bicyclists at Simon Park on Friday, May 18, courtesy of CAB. Cyclists are invited to join a group ride to Simon Park, which will begin at the Tucker Creek trailhead at the West Conway Wal-Mart at 7:30 a.m. Cyclists who choose to ride in on their own will be offered breakfast at Simon Park from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
Bike from Work Social at ZAZA’s
The Bike from Work Social at ZAZA’s at the Hendrix Village, presented by CAB, is set for 5-7 p.m. on Friday, May 18.
Progressive Dinner Ride
A Progressive Dinner presented by The Ride and CAB is set for Sunday, May 20. The group ride will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Simon Park and will stop at four Conway homes for refreshments. RSVPs should be made with Erik Leamon at The Ride at 501-764-4500.
CAB Community Ride
The monthly CAB Community Ride will be the conclusion of National Bike Month activities at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 27 with a leisurely ride taking off from Simon Park. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
